This book is a mixture of memoirs, stories and thoughts about life and current issues. It was all written with a light touch over a couple of months while the author was recovering from a major surgery. It includes comments on some of the political and economic issues of the day, written with a light touch. The sections of the book are not in chronological order, as they jump back and forth in time as stories are told or comments are made on various topics. In the last dozen pages, the book leaves the memoirs behind and instead speculates about the future.
Thorbjørn Waagstein was born in 1950 in Ilulissat, Greenland, and raised in Ilulissat and later in Klaksvík, Faroe Islands. He has a PhD in economics from the University of Copenhagen and was a researcher and associate professor there until 1990. In the 1990s, he worked on development projects in Central America and since 1999 as an international consultant for development aid in Latin America, Africa and Asia, based in Nicaragua. A recurring theme in his life is taking an active stance in favor of ordinary working people and against elites, imperialism and colonialism. The book also contains comments on current issues seen from this perspective.
